The Kalgoorlie Open Pit gold mine, famously known as the Super Pit, was Australia’s largest open cut gold mine until 2016 when it was surpassed by the Newmont Boddington gold mine also in Western Australia. The Super Pit is located off the Goldfields Highway on the south-east edge of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia.
The Golden Mile is located on the eastern edge of Kalgoorlie-Boulder. Paddy Hannan discovered gold here in 1893. It led to one of the largest gold rushes in Australia's history. After a couple of years when the alluvial gold had been exhausted, companies were floated in London to mine the reef gold.
